OpenAI’s GPT-5 Launch Triggers Backlash Over Performance Concerns

Within 24 hours of its release, users flooded social media-especially Reddit- with criticism over unmet expectations.

OpenAI’s latest AI model, GPT-5, has sparked a wave of mixed reactions online, with many users expressing disappointment just a day after its launch. Social media platforms, particularly Reddit, saw a sharp increase in critical posts, with numerous users stating that the next-generation ChatGPT model failed to deliver on the hype, as reported by TechCrunch.

The launch took place on 7 August, during a one-hour livestream event hosted by CEO Sam Altman and other OpenAI executives. The presentation showcased GPT-5’s upgraded features and improvements over its predecessor, GPT-4o.

However, backlash began almost immediately. A Reddit thread titled “GPT-5 is horrible” quickly gained momentum, amassing over 4,500 upvotes and 1,700+ comments, most of which criticized the model’s performance and limitations.

Adding to the dissatisfaction, several ChatGPT Plus subscribers voiced frustration over the changes introduced with GPT-5. Users complained that the update diminished the value of the paid subscription, citing restricted functionalities.

According to TechCrunch, the new GPT-5 “Thinking” model is limited to 200 messages per week. Additionally, Plus subscribers have lost access to a broader set of AI models that were previously included in the plan.
