Tesla Launches in India with First Model Y Delivery in Mumbai

Tesla Launches in India with First Model Y Delivery in Mumbai

Elon Musk’s EV pioneer enters India’s premium auto market amid cautious optimism and high import duties

After years of speculation, stalled talks, and eager anticipation, Tesla has finally made its official debut in India. The first customer delivery – a Model Y – was handed over to Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik at Tesla’s newly opened showroom in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai, marking a historic moment for the country’s electric mobility landscape.

A Symbolic Milestone for EV Adoption

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Sarnaik shared that the car is a personal purchase, meant to promote awareness about sustainable transportation among citizens – especially the younger generation.

“Children should see these cars early and understand the importance of green mobility,” he said, adding that he would be gifting the Model Y to his grandson as a symbolic gesture.

The delivery event also spotlighted Tesla’s premium positioning in India, with its Mumbai showroom reportedly becoming one of the most expensive auto retail spaces in the country.

Slow but Strategic Start

Despite the buzz, Tesla’s India launch has been low-volume and highly targeted. According to Bloomberg, the company has received just over 600 bookings since opening reservations in July 2025 – a modest figure for a brand that typically moves those numbers globally within hours.

Tesla plans to deliver 350–500 vehicles in India this year, with the first consignment of Model Ys arriving from its Gigafactory in Shanghai earlier this month. Deliveries will initially be limited to Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, and Gurugram.

Price Sensitivity and Import Duty Hurdles

Tesla’s ambitious India entry is being tested by steep import tariffs, which have pushed the price of its entry-level Model Y to over ₹60 lakh – nearly three times the average EV price in India, which stands around ₹22 lakh.

The high cost is a major deterrent in the price-sensitive Indian market, where EV adoption is still primarily driven by affordability, government subsidies, and local manufacturing.

The Road Ahead: Localisation or Limitation?

While this marks a critical first step for Tesla in India, questions remain around sustainability, scalability, and localisation. Industry insiders suggest that Tesla’s expansion in India may hinge on its willingness to set up local manufacturing or assembly, which would qualify the company for lower import duties under India’s evolving EV policies.

The Indian government has been vocal about welcoming foreign EV makers, but has maintained a firm stance on Make in India commitments.

Despite the premium pricing and limited rollout, Tesla’s long-awaited India debut is a bold signal of the company’s global ambitions – and of India’s growing importance in the future of sustainable mobility.

Whether this slow entry gains real momentum will depend on policy clarity, infrastructure development, and perhaps most importantly, Tesla’s willingness to go local.
