Spotify Rolls Out AI Transparency Rules and Anti-Spam Measures to Protect Music Ecosystem

Spotify has announced a sweeping set of policy updates designed to protect artists, producers, and listeners from misuse of generative AI on its platform. As AI adoption accelerates in music creation, Spotify is taking proactive steps to ensure innovation thrives without compromising artist rights or listener trust.

The new measures focus on three key areas: stronger anti-impersonation policies, a next-gen music spam filter, and standardized AI disclosures in track credits.

Stricter Impersonation Rules
Spotify’s updated policy now explicitly bans AI-generated vocal clones and deepfakes that use an artist’s voice without permission. The platform is collaborating with distributors to prevent fraudulent uploads and has improved its internal reporting tools, enabling artists to flag impersonation attempts before release.

AI-Powered Spam Filtering
To curb mass-uploaded, low-quality content-often referred to as “AI slop”-Spotify is launching a sophisticated filtering system this fall. The tool will detect duplicates, SEO spam, and artificially short tracks, reducing their visibility and protecting the royalty pool for legitimate creators.

AI Transparency in Credits
In partnership with DDEX and distribution partners like Believe, CD Baby, and DistroKid, Spotify will begin displaying AI involvement in track metadata, from AI-generated vocals to production assistance, giving listeners a clear view of how music is made.

These updates build on Spotify’s removal of over 75 million spam tracks in the past year, reinforcing its mission to protect artist identity, ensure fair payouts, and maintain a healthy, trustworthy music ecosystem.
