Z and India’s Satellite TV Industry Celebrate 33 Years of Entertainment Excellence

This year marks 33 years since the launch of Zee TV by Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. (‘Z’), a milestone that also celebrates the growth and transformation of India’s private satellite television industry.

From a single channel in 1992 to a global entertainment powerhouse, Z has mirrored the rise of India’s Media & Entertainment (M&E) sector, now generating approximately Rs. 2.5 trillion annually and providing livelihoods to around 2.8 million people. The industry has expanded to over 908 private satellite channels, 70+ OTT platforms, nearly 40,000 artists, and more than 3,400 feature films produced each year.

As a pioneer, Z has championed authentic, culturally rich storytelling across languages, while creating opportunities for artists, creators, technicians, and distributors across television, digital, music, live entertainment, and films.

Punit Goenka, CEO, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd., said: “The journey of Z is intertwined with India’s M&E story. Over 33 years, we’ve entertained and empowered the nation, engaging billions and creating meaningful moments of togetherness. This celebration inspires us to continue fostering creativity, nurturing talent, and driving industry growth for the years ahead.”

Looking forward, Z is expanding its omni-channel strategy, investing in short-form content, and leveraging insights to design engaging entertainment experiences. With nearly INR 1 lakh crore in FDI already invested, India’s M&E sector is projected to grow 7% annually, reaching INR 3.07 trillion by 2027-strengthening India’s position as a global creative powerhouse and soft power leader.
