Google Maps Rolls Out Gemini AI With Smarter Voice Tools and Faster Traffic Updates

Google has begun deploying Gemini AI across Google Maps, introducing more intuitive voice interactions, faster traffic alerts and enhanced navigation tools for multiple travel modes. The rollout marks a significant step in Google’s plan to make Gemini the core intelligence behind voice-driven assistance within Maps.

With the update, users can access Gemini while navigating by car, on foot, via public transport or on two-wheelers. Maps will automatically match the language and voice settings stored in a user’s Google account. The familiar multicoloured microphone icon has also been replaced with the Gemini symbol, signalling the shift to the new AI-powered assistant. Despite these changes, “Hey Google” remains the wake phrase for activating voice interactions.

Gemini now enables deeper contextual assistance, letting users ask for nearby food stops, parking spaces, EV charging stations or fuel stations along their route. The system supports follow-up questions without requiring the user to repeat earlier details. For example, after asking about fuel stations en route, a driver can simply say “Take me there,” and Gemini will act on the context. Google says this approach is designed to simplify travel-related decision-making.

The update also enhances real-time reporting and planning. Users can notify Maps of incidents or blockages and receive earlier alerts about potential traffic delays before starting a trip. Google has further added landmark-based navigation, allowing directions to reference prominent nearby locations rather than only distances or street names. This feature, along with upgraded traffic notifications, is currently rolling out in the US.

Gemini has also been integrated into Lens in Maps, enabling users to point their camera at a location and ask contextual questions. This capability is launching first in the US on both Android and iOS, with wider availability expected soon.
