Apple is reportedly planning a significant transformation of Siri, aiming to reposition its digital assistant as a full-fledged AI chatbot with the launch of iOS 27. According to a Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman, the redesigned Siri is expected to support both voice and text-based interactions, bringing it closer to conversational AI platforms like ChatGPT.

Internally codenamed Campos, the new Siri is likely to be unveiled as a key highlight at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. The move signals a notable shift in Apple’s artificial intelligence strategy, as the company adapts to growing competition in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

Previously, Apple had maintained that Siri would not function as a standalone chatbot. Senior Vice President Craig Federighi had emphasized Apple’s preference for embedding AI features seamlessly into the operating system rather than offering a separate conversational interface. However, the widespread adoption of AI chatbots appears to have influenced a change in direction, with Apple now rethinking how users interact with intelligent assistants.

The pressure to accelerate innovation has reportedly intensified as OpenAI prepares to enter the hardware space, a project said to be led by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. Meanwhile, Apple has faced criticism for lagging behind competitors in deploying advanced AI capabilities. The company delayed the rollout of a more personalized Siri and spent much of the past year evaluating partnerships with AI firms such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

Ultimately, Apple chose Google’s Gemini as its AI partner, a collaboration confirmed earlier this month. With iOS 27, Apple seems poised to redefine Siri’s role-positioning it as a more conversational, capable, and competitive AI assistant for the future.
