Asianet Launches World’s First ‘Pooppattu’ – A Musical Ode to Onam’s Floral Traditions

In a landmark celebration of Onam, Asianet has introduced a groundbreaking musical tribute – the world’s first-ever Pooppattu (Flower Song) – blending Kerala’s deep-rooted traditions with modern musical innovation.

The initiative, developed in collaboration with noted composer Justin Varghese and celebrated singer-actor Remya Nambeesan, reimagines the Onam experience for new generations. Titled #ColorOnam, the campaign aims to rekindle the cultural significance of floral traditions central to the festival.

What makes Pooppattu truly unique is its creative concept – using the natural vibrations and sound frequencies of traditional Onam flowers like Thumba, Thechi, Chembarathi, and Shankupushpam to craft an original musical score. The result is a soul-stirring composition that celebrates both the science and sentiment of Kerala’s floral heritage.

Historically, each flower used in a Pookkalam (floral rangoli) carried symbolic meaning – Thumba was seen as sacred, Mukkutty associated with luck, and Thechi symbolized strength and devotion. Asianet’s Pooppattu brings these forgotten meanings back to life, encouraging viewers to reconnect with Onam rituals such as collecting backyard blooms with family and friends.

The music video offers a sensory celebration of unity, nostalgia, and community – values central to Onam – while showcasing how tradition can thrive through technology and creativity.

With Pooppattu, Asianet once again leads the way in storytelling that bridges generations, turning a timeless festival into a vivid, musical experience for today’s audience.
