Former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni has filed for a trademark on his iconic nickname “Captain Cool”, as per public records from Intellectual Property India. The application, submitted on June 5, 2023, has cleared prelims and is now in the “accepted and advertised” stage-making it open to opposition before final registration.
The term “Captain Cool” is synonymous with Dhoni’s composed demeanor in pressure-packed moments. His application, filed under Class 41, seeks protection for sports training, training facilities, and coaching services.
Previously, Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Pvt Ltd had applied for the same term in July 2021 under the same class. That application is currently flagged as “rectification filed”, likely indicating a challenge or conflict-clearing the way for Dhoni’s bid.
Hall-of-Fame Honour Reinforces the Brand
Earlier this month, Dhoni was officially inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in London, becoming the 11th Indian cricketer to receive the prestigious accolade. As the only captain to have led India to all three major ICC white-ball titles-the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy-Dhoni’s legacy is unmatched.
Batting & Keeping Legacy
- Dhoni redefined the finisher’s role in ODIs, with his unbeaten 183 against Sri Lanka in 2005 remaining the highest score by an Indian wicketkeeper.
- He finished with 10,000+ ODI runs at an average over 50.
- Behind the stumps, Dhoni’s quick glove work and sharp reflexes set new standards.
Across 538 international matches, Dhoni amassed 17,266 runs and effected 829 dismissals-further cementing the reputation encapsulated by “Captain Cool.”
Dhoni’s trademark move is a strategic step to reclaim ownership of a nickname that has come to define his brand-both on and off the field.
