Ekta and Shobha Kapoor Clarify Disassociation from ALTT Amid OTT Ban

Balaji Telefilms confirms no operational ties to the platform since 2021.

In light of the government’s recent directive to block 25 OTT platforms for allegedly hosting obscene or pornographic content, Balaji Telefilms has issued a formal clarification regarding ALTT. The company stated that Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor have had no association with the platform since stepping down from the board of ALT Digital Media Entertainment in June 2021.

In a public statement posted to her official social media channels, Ekta Kapoor emphasized, “Shobha Kapoor and I are not associated in any capacity whatsoever with ALTT. Any reports suggesting otherwise are factually incorrect and strongly denied.”

Balaji Telefilms further clarified that it is now a professionally managed, publicly listed company and does not oversee ALTT’s operations. As per a National Company Law Tribunal-approved merger effective June 20, 2025, ALT Digital Media Entertainment-formerly a wholly owned subsidiary-now operates ALTT as an independent entity.

This clarification comes on the heels of a Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) crackdown, in which ALTT was among 25 OTT platforms ordered to be blocked for violating Indian laws related to obscene content. Other platforms named in the directive include ULLU, Big Shots App, Desiflix, Boomex, Navarasa Lite, Gulab App, Kangan App, and Jalva App.

The Kapoors’ statement seeks to draw a clear line between their past role in launching ALTT and the platform’s current operations, as regulatory scrutiny over OTT content intensifies in India.
