Elon Musk’s Tesla to Launch Its First Experience Centre in India on July 15

Physical presence marks key milestone in long-anticipated India entry

Mumbai – Tesla is set to inaugurate its first experience centre in India on July 15, 2025, located at Jio World Drive in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai . This facility will serve as the brand’s initial physical footprint in the country ahead of its retail launch of imported EVs.

The 4,000 sq ft centre, leased in March, is strategically placed near Apple’s flagship store, underlining Tesla’s premium positioning. This aligns with Tesla’s broader India strategy, including an engineering hub in Pune, a Bengaluru office, and plans for a showroom in New Delhi.

Five Model Y EVs from Tesla’s Shanghai factory have already arrived in Mumbai. Each was declared at ₹27.7 lakh, attracting over ₹21 lakh in import duties due to India’s 70% tariff on EVs under US$40,000.

Tesla has stepped up hiring for sales, service, and operations roles, and is scouting locations for its Delhi showroom and service centres. This follows ongoing discussions with government officials for reduced import duties and incentives—a precursor to future manufacturing in India.

After cutting duties on high-end EVs priced over US$40,000 from 125% to 70%, India is making luxury imports more accessible. Additionally, basic customs duties on lithium-ion EV batteries have been eliminated, boosting prospects for domestic EV manufacturing.

What This Means for Tesla and India:

  • Symbolic Launch: Experience centre introduces Tesla’s design, tech, and EV ethos to Indian consumers.
  • Premium EV Positioning: Proximity to Apple store reinforces Tesla’s aspirational brand image.
  • Strategic Build-Up: Hiring, showroom scouting, and infrastructure investments indicate a long-term market play.
  • Tariff Advantage: Lowered duties on EVs and batteries create a more favourable environment.
  • Next Steps: Expect a Delhi centre to follow, along with service hubs-though local manufacturing remains on the horizon.

Tesla’s July 15 launch isn’t just an opening-it’s a checkpoint marking the start of its India journey. With complex duties, regulatory progress, and luxury positioning in play, Tesla is preparing to redefine the country’s EV narrative.
