Google News Introduces AI-Powered Audio Briefings on Android

Google News is enhancing its mobile experience with a new audio-first feature designed for users who prefer listening to headlines over reading them. The update introduces a dedicated Listen tab in the Google News app, allowing Android users to consume daily news summaries in a hands-free format-ideal for commutes, workouts, or multitasking.

The feature, called Google News Audio Briefing, delivers AI-generated summaries of the day’s top stories in a single audio segment, running approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Two AI hosts present the news conversationally, making the briefing engaging and easy to follow. Users can view headlines on-screen, open full articles, or explore related coverage through the Full Coverage section directly from the audio interface.

Integrated into version 5.146.x of the Android app, the Listen tab follows Google’s Material 3 Expressive design language, featuring large playback buttons, simplified controls, and a minimisable audio player. This allows users to continue browsing other content or switch between apps without interrupting playback.

The rollout currently targets Android users, with broader availability planned in the coming weeks. By combining AI-driven narration with a seamless, intuitive interface, Google News Audio Briefing aims to make consuming news faster, more convenient, and engaging, while catering to evolving media consumption habits.
