WhatsApp has unveiled one of its most ambitious and emotionally resonant films for rural India- a nine-minute narrative that highlights the role of Voice and Video Notes in nurturing connection. Conceptualised by ad agency Fundamental, Baatan Hi Baatan Mein is set in north-central Madhya Pradesh and draws inspiration from the lives of millions of migrant workers who live far from their families, where communication is often shaped by distance, patchy networks, and irregular work schedules.

The film follows Aasha and Manoj, a newly married couple who barely know each other. Separated by Manoj’s job and the lack of privacy in Aasha’s new home, the two navigate a fragile space between longing and routine. In this emotional swirl, WhatsApp’s Voice and Video Notes become their bridge-facilitating shy exchanges that gradually blossom into genuine intimacy.

Launching first in Madhya Pradesh, the film will be screened across semi-rural and rural single-screen cinemas. Travelling cinemas will take the story to over 240 villages and hamlets for community viewings. The short film will also stream on platforms including Zee5 and JioHotstar.

The campaign extends beyond the film with a series of educational shorts and text-free Ambient User Guides tailored for rural audiences, ensuring comprehension without the need for reading.

Neeraj Kanitkar, Co-Founder of Fundamental, described the creative idea as “pebbling”-using simple voice and video messages as small acts of love whose impact grows over time. Director Amit Sharma noted that the story demanded a cinematic lens, cultural authenticity, and characters audiences could recognise in their own lives. He expressed his excitement about the film’s distinctive distribution approach, bringing it directly to remote communities.
