Kalli Purie Opens Sahitya Aaj Tak 2025, Says Literature Holds Life’s Fragile Threads Together

At the inauguration of the 8th edition of Sahitya Aaj Tak in Delhi, Kalli Purie – Vice Chairperson and Executive Editor-in-Chief of the India Today Group – delivered a moving reflection on how literature strengthens human connections amid life’s unpredictability. Addressing an audience filled with leading figures from literature, art, and music, Purie emphasised that in a world marked by sudden tragedy, storytelling remains a powerful force that binds people together.

Purie recalled the sombre events that shaped India’s year. The Pahalgam terror attack, which took place in the scenic Baisaran Valley while tourists were enjoying their holiday, claimed 26 lives and left the country shaken. Just two months later, Air India flight 171, traveling from Ahmedabad to London, crashed into a medical college building, killing 260 passengers – another blow that left the nation grieving.

“These incidents remind us how fragile life truly is,” Purie said, quoting the iconic Kishore Kumar line, “Zindagi ek safar hai suhana, yahaan kal kya ho kisne jaana.” She underscored how literature becomes even more essential during such times – offering perspective, healing, and a way to strengthen emotional bonds when the world feels uncertain.

Purie highlighted that Sahitya Aaj Tak has always been a space where ideas, emotions, and creativity come together, helping society make sense of its joys and sorrows. As the festival opens its doors once again, her message served as a reminder that while life may be unpredictable, words and stories continue to offer strength, connection, and resilience.
