Meta Halts Global Expansion of Ray-Ban Display Smart Glasses After Strong US Demand

Meta has temporarily paused plans to expand the availability of its Ray-Ban Display smart glasses beyond the United States, citing limited inventory and unexpectedly high demand. The decision comes just months after the product’s debut, signaling a stronger-than-anticipated consumer response to Meta’s first smart glasses featuring an integrated display.

Launched in September and made available in the US shortly thereafter, the Ray-Ban Display glasses were originally slated for rollout in markets such as the UK, France, Italy and Canada in early 2026. However, Meta has now confirmed that these international expansion plans have been put on hold.

According to company statements, the Ray-Ban Display is a first-of-its-kind product developed in partnership with eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica and is currently being produced in limited quantities. Since its launch last autumn, interest in the device has exceeded expectations, with waitlists reportedly stretching well into 2026. As a result, Meta has chosen to prioritise fulfilling existing orders in the US while reassessing its strategy for global availability.

The Ray-Ban Display glasses mark a significant step forward in wearable technology for Meta. They feature a 600×600p full-colour display with a 20-degree field of view, making them the company’s first smart glasses to include a visual interface. The device also includes a 12-megapixel camera with 3x zoom, supported by an in-lens display that acts as a viewfinder to help users frame shots more accurately.

Additional features include a six-microphone array, open-ear speakers for music and calls, and built-in access to Meta AI. Users can view AI-generated responses, follow step-by-step tutorials, send and receive messages on Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, and make video calls on WhatsApp and Messenger using simple gestures.

For now, Meta’s focus remains firmly on meeting US demand as it navigates supply constraints and plans its next move in the global smart eyewear market.
