Meta Reinforces Anti-Scam Strategy as Global Online Fraud Escalates

Meta has announced new measures to combat rising online fraud across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, aligning the update with the Global Anti-Scam Summit held this week in Washington, DC. The company noted that online scams continue to spread across sectors including dating apps, financial platforms, cryptocurrency services, gaming environments and messaging apps.

Meta reported removing more than 134 million scam ads in the first ten months of 2025. User reports about scam ads have dropped by over 50% within the past 15 months, which the company credits to improved detection systems.

AI-Driven Enforcement and Verification

Meta said it now uses advanced AI systems, automation and product-level defenses to identify suspicious activity earlier. In the first half of 2025 alone, Meta disrupted nearly 12 million fraudulent accounts linked to organised “criminal scam centers.”

Its facial recognition tools have also expanded to detect the misuse of public figures in misleading ads — a tactic commonly used in investment scams. Advertiser verification has tightened, especially in high-risk categories like finance and crypto promotions.

Partnerships and Legal Action

Meta highlighted new enforcement milestones carried out with global authorities. These include working with the FBI and Singaporean agencies to dismantle an illegal gambling network, supporting U.S. federal investigations tied to Myanmar-based scam operations, and filing more than 60 legal cases against scammers.

Information-sharing networks such as FIRE and the Global Signal Exchange continue to support cross-industry intelligence.

Meta also voiced support for multiple U.S. bipartisan bills aimed at strengthening nationwide anti-fraud legislation.

The company said long-term progress will rely on technology, policy alignment, and global collaboration.
