India’s micro-drama segment has rapidly scaled into a $300 million market within its first year, according to Lumikai’s State of Interactive Media Report 2025. This surge reflects a broader shift toward mobile-first, short-form storytelling formats that align with evolving consumer behaviour.
The report highlights that India’s interactive media ecosystem has reached $13.8 billion, growing at 17% year-on-year. With a base of 877 million smartphone users, the market continues to expand across categories such as microdramas, gaming, astro platforms, and interactive learning.
Microdramas, defined by bite-sized, vertical storytelling, have gained significant traction with 450 million downloads and 100 million monthly active users in just one year. The segment is projected to grow exponentially, reaching $4.5 billion by 2030, underlining its long-term potential.
Gaming remains another key growth driver, crossing $1.5 billion with a user base of 555 million gamers. A notable 25% payer conversion indicates improving monetisation, supported by in-app purchases and advertising revenues.
The report also sheds light on regulatory impacts within real-money gaming. Following recent restrictions, a portion of users has migrated to offshore platforms, while others have shifted their time and spending toward alternative formats like microdramas and social entertainment.
Emerging high-intent categories such as astro, devotional, and micro-learning platforms are also gaining momentum, delivering higher revenue per user despite smaller audiences.
Additionally, India’s $1.6 billion animation and VFX industry is evolving, with AI accelerating production and enabling a shift toward original content creation.
Overall, the report underscores a clear transition toward mobile-native, interactive, and highly personalised digital ecosystems.
