OpenAI has introduced the OpenAI Academy for News Organizations, a digital learning platform aimed at helping journalists and publishers integrate artificial intelligence into newsroom workflows. Developed in partnership with the American Journalism Project and The Lenfest Institute for Journalism, the initiative was unveiled at the recent AI and Journalism Summit.

The academy is designed as a practical resource for newsrooms, offering hands-on training, technical playbooks and real-world case studies tailored specifically for media professionals. Among the key offerings is AI Essentials for Journalists, a foundational module that explains core AI concepts and their relevance to journalism. In addition, the programme includes specialised sessions for product and technology teams focused on building and deploying custom AI-powered solutions.

The curriculum emphasises real-world applications of AI in journalism, such as investigative research, data analysis, multilingual reporting and improving production efficiency. By focusing on everyday newsroom use cases, the academy aims to help organisations adopt AI tools in ways that enhance reporting quality and operational effectiveness.

To encourage broader industry collaboration, the platform also provides access to open-source projects and shared resources. These materials allow news organisations to adapt and customise tools based on their specific editorial and operational needs. A key component of the academy is its focus on responsible AI adoption, offering guidance on ethical use, internal governance frameworks and policies that address accuracy, transparency and accountability.

The launch builds on OpenAI’s existing collaborations with global media organisations including News Corp, Axel Springer and The Financial Times. Looking ahead, OpenAI plans to expand the academy with live programming and additional coursework, supporting the long-term sustainability of journalism in an increasingly AI-driven media landscape.
