OpenAI launches ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-first web browser redefining online experience

The browser integrates ChatGPT at its core, enabling summarisation, task automation, and contextual memory for seamless web interaction.

OpenAI has announced the launch of ChatGPT Atlas, a next-generation web browser built to place its AI assistant at the centre of how users experience the internet. Described as a step toward creating a “super-assistant,” Atlas represents OpenAI’s bold move to compete with Google in the evolving landscape of AI-driven search and intelligent browsing.

With ChatGPT natively integrated, Atlas transforms browsing into an interactive experience-allowing users to summarise pages, extract insights, or perform actions without switching tabs or copying information. “AI gives us a rare moment to rethink what it means to use the web,” OpenAI stated. “A browser built with ChatGPT takes us closer to a true super-assistant that understands your world and helps you achieve your goals.”

A key feature, browser memory, lets ChatGPT retain context from visited sites and recall it when needed. Users can, for instance, ask the assistant to compile a summary of previously viewed job postings or analyse market trends. OpenAI has emphasised that memory settings are optional and transparent, giving users full control to view, archive, or delete data anytime.

For paid users, Atlas also introduces an enhanced agent mode, enabling ChatGPT to complete complex, multi-step tasks such as researching, event planning, or scheduling appointments-leveraging real-time web context for improved efficiency.

The browser is rolling out globally for macOS, accessible to Free, Plus, Pro, and Go users, while Business, Enterprise, and Edu users can access a beta version depending on their plan settings. Windows, iOS, and Android versions are slated to follow soon.

Atlas arrives at a pivotal moment as AI reshapes how users search, learn, and interact online. With over 800 million weekly active ChatGPT users, OpenAI is positioning Atlas as a conversational alternative to traditional search-offering synthesis and reasoning instead of mere keyword-based results.

The launch places OpenAI in direct competition with emerging AI-powered browsers such as Perplexity’s Comet, Brave, and Opera Neon-all racing to redefine web experiences through automation, contextual understanding, and intelligent summarisation.

With Atlas, OpenAI signals a future where browsing is not just about accessing information, but about collaborating with an AI that learns, assists, and evolves alongside the user.
