The long-awaited AI-powered browser promises a cleaner, question-first internet experience, moving away from ad-driven web models.
AI research firm Perplexity has officially launched its Comet browser globally, offering what it calls “a radically better internet experience.” First introduced in a limited release on July 9, Comet quickly attracted millions of waitlist sign-ups, becoming one of the year’s most anticipated AI products.
The browser integrates Perplexity’s AI assistant, designed to transform online interaction. Moving away from ad-heavy, click-driven navigation, Comet encourages conversational discovery. Early access users reportedly asked 6 to 18 times more questions on their first day, indicating that curiosity, rather than consumption, can drive engagement.
Comet combines AI-driven browsing with productivity tools. The Comet Assistant can research, summarize, and perform tasks across tabs, from managing emails to assisting with coding or online shopping, acting as a personal AI companion. Perplexity has also introduced Email Assistant for inbox automation and Background Assistants for asynchronous project support, creating a platform where “curiosity becomes productivity.”
A mobile version of Comet is in the works, bringing assistant features to phones with voice-based interactions while removing clutter, ads, and outdated app interfaces.
Beyond browsing, Perplexity aims to enhance media credibility through Comet Plus, which highlights stories from verified global publishers, integrating journalism into the ecosystem.
“Comet represents a shift from an internet optimized for clicks to one built around curiosity,” Perplexity said. “Our mission is to support the world’s curiosity by building AI products that are genuinely useful, so people can ask more of the world.”
