Veteran journalist Rahul Kanwal has been appointed as the Editor-in-Chief and CEO of NDTV Group, marking a significant leadership shift as the company integrates editorial and business operations. Kanwal, who resigned from the India Today Group after a distinguished 22-year tenure, is expected to assume his new role at NDTV following formalities and negotiations.
This strategic move aligns with NDTV’s broader vision to blend editorial leadership with business acumen, enhancing its competitive edge in India’s dynamic media landscape. Kanwal’s appointment follows that of Shiv Aroor, another former India Today anchor, who joined NDTV as Executive Editor in April 2025. Aroor’s transition occurred after an 18-year tenure at India Today, where he served as Senior Executive Editor and Anchor. His departure was finalized in February 2025, with a brief sabbatical before commencing his new role at NDTV.
These appointments reflect a broader trend of seasoned media professionals transitioning into executive roles. Notably, Uday Shankar, former News Director at Aaj Tak, now serves as Vice Chairman of JioStar, while Gaurav Banerjee, previously with Disney and Star India, has been appointed as Managing Director and CEO of Sony Pictures Networks India.
Kanwal’s leadership is anticipated to steer NDTV through its next phase of growth, focusing on integrating editorial integrity with business strategy to navigate the evolving media landscape under the Adani Group’s ownership.
