The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reappointed former India captain Sourav Ganguly as chairperson of the men’s cricket committee, the global governing body announced Sunday. This extension continues Ganguly’s leadership role that began in 2021 when he succeeded Indian cricket legend Anil Kumble.
Ganguly, 52, who captained India from 2000 to 2005, will be joined by his former national teammate VVS Laxman, who has also been re-elected to the panel. The reconstituted committee features several prominent cricket figures including former Afghanistan player Hamid Hassan, West Indies batting great Desmond Haynes, current South Africa Test and ODI captain Temba Bavuma, and former England batter Jonathan Trott.
In a parallel development, the ICC has formed a new women’s cricket committee with former New Zealand off-spinner Catherine Campbell serving as chairperson. Former Australian player Avril Fahey and Cricket South Africa’s Pholetsi Moseki complete this committee.
ICC Secretary General Jay Shah emphasized the organization’s commitment to inclusivity in cricket, particularly highlighting initiatives for displaced Afghan women cricketers. “At the International Cricket Council, we are deeply committed to fostering inclusivity and ensuring every cricketer has the opportunity to shine, regardless of their circumstances,” Shah stated.
He announced the launch of a special task force and support fund, complemented by a comprehensive high-performance program, designed to help displaced Afghan women cricketers continue their sporting careers despite challenging circumstances.
These appointments reflect the ICC’s ongoing efforts to balance experienced leadership with diverse representation across its committee structures as global cricket continues to evolve.
