WhatsApp for iPhone set to roll out long-awaited multi-account support

WhatsApp for iPhone is preparing to introduce multi-account support – a feature users have been requesting for years and one that arrived on Android in late 2023. As reported by WABetaInfo, the messaging platform has begun testing the capability through a new TestFlight beta update, allowing select iOS users to run more than one WhatsApp account on a single device.

Beta testers will now spot an “Account List” section within the Settings menu, while some users may see a new shortcut next to the QR code icon. The interface lets users add a second account without needing an additional device or switching to the WhatsApp Business app.

Once enabled, users can move seamlessly between profiles directly through Settings. Each account will operate independently, maintaining its own chat history, notification controls, privacy settings, reaction preferences and auto-download configurations. Customisation options – such as distinct notification tones or separate visibility settings for last seen, profile photo and read receipts – will also be available for individual accounts.

Importantly, WhatsApp will continue delivering messages to all linked accounts even when one profile is inactive, clearly labelling incoming chats so users can distinguish between primary and secondary profiles.

To make the experience smoother, WhatsApp is also testing shortcuts for faster switching, including a double-tap gesture on the Settings tab. Users will be able to add a fresh number, reuse an old WhatsApp number or link a companion device account as their secondary profile by scanning a QR code.

The company is also expected to extend App Lock support to multiple accounts, enabling users to secure each profile separately through Face ID, Touch ID or a password – adding an extra layer of privacy for those juggling work and personal messaging.
