Initial rollout begins in the U.S. with English support; global availability to follow.
WhatsApp has introduced a new feature called Message Summaries, aimed at helping users navigate unread chats more efficiently. Powered by Meta AI, the feature generates brief, AI-driven summaries of unread messages-offering users a quick overview without needing to open each conversation.
Announced via an official blog post, the feature is part of WhatsApp’s broader push to integrate AI for enhanced user experience across its platform.
Privacy-First Summaries with On-Device AI
The Message Summaries feature is built using Meta’s Private Processing technology, ensuring all AI processing happens locally on the user’s device. This means neither Meta nor WhatsApp can access the message content or the summaries, maintaining end-to-end privacy. Additionally, no notification or marker is shown in chats indicating that the feature was used.
User-Controlled & Customisable
The feature is opt-in by default, and users can enable it manually through Advanced Chat Privacy settings. It also allows granular control-users can choose which chats are summarised, offering a more personalised and secure experience.
Limited Launch, Wider Rollout Soon
The initial release supports English-language users in the United States, with plans for a broader global rollout later this year. The launch marks another step in Meta’s growing investment in AI tools designed to improve communication, productivity, and user control across its platforms.
