The feature aims to enhance visual discovery by allowing users to identify objects or landmarks within Shorts videos.
YouTube is introducing Google Lens integration into its Shorts platform in the coming weeks, enhancing visual interactivity and discovery. According to a TechCrunch report, the new feature will enable users to identify and learn more about objects, landmarks, and items seen in Shorts videos by simply tapping on them.
The update is part of YouTube’s broader initiative to merge AI-powered tools with video content, offering a more intuitive and engaging user experience. For example, viewers watching a travel Short could tap on a monument to instantly access information about its cultural or historical background.
With this integration, users will be able to pause a video, tap the “Lens” icon from the top menu, and either tap, draw, or highlight objects on-screen. Google Lens will then provide relevant search results and visual matches, which appear over the video without interrupting playback. Once done, viewers can return to the Shorts feed exactly where they left off.
YouTube clarified that ads will not appear in search results during the beta testing phase of the feature. However, Shorts containing YouTube Shopping affiliate links or paid product placements will not support the Lens tool during its initial rollout, ensuring a distraction-free trial experience.
The beta version of Google Lens in Shorts is now being gradually rolled out to users starting this week.
