Google Introduces Android Emergency Location Sharing in India, Launches Pilot in Uttar Pradesh

Google has officially launched its Emergency Location Service (ELS) in India, marking a significant step toward improving emergency response systems. The rollout begins with Uttar Pradesh, making it the first Indian state to fully operationalize the feature on Android devices. ELS is designed to automatically share a caller’s precise location with emergency services as soon as an emergency call or SMS-such as to the national helpline number 112-is made.

Built directly into the Android operating system, ELS aims to assist in situations where individuals are panicked, injured, or unable to clearly communicate their location. It also proves useful in cases where calls disconnect due to weak network connectivity. By transmitting location data instantly, the service helps responders reach people in distress more quickly and accurately.

Google explained that ELS uses a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi, and mobile network signals to determine location, often achieving accuracy within 50 metres. In addition to location details, limited contextual information like the device’s language may also be shared to support emergency personnel.

In Uttar Pradesh, the system has been integrated into the state’s 112 emergency response framework by the Uttar Pradesh Police, with technical support from Pert Telecom Solutions. During pilot testing over the past few months, ELS reportedly helped identify locations for over 20 million emergency calls and messages, including several cases where location data was sent even after calls dropped.

Addressing privacy concerns, Google stated that ELS activates only during emergency situations. The service is free, requires no additional apps or hardware, and does not store or collect user location data-information is sent directly from the device to emergency services.

Currently available on Android devices running version 6.0 and above in Uttar Pradesh, Google plans to collaborate with more Indian states in the coming months to expand ELS nationwide and strengthen emergency response capabilities across the country.
