State-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has rolled out Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) services across India, marking a significant step toward improving voice connectivity in regions with weak or inconsistent mobile signals. Announced via the company’s social media channels, the nationwide launch places BSNL alongside other major telecom players offering Wi-Fi calling as a standard feature.
VoWiFi allows users to make and receive voice calls and send SMS messages using a Wi-Fi connection instead of depending solely on cellular networks. This ensures uninterrupted communication in areas where mobile coverage is limited, such as villages, remote regions, basements, high-rise buildings, or homes with thick walls. As long as a user is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network, calls can be placed seamlessly.
BSNL has clarified that the service works with both its own Bharat Fibre broadband and third-party Wi-Fi networks. Compatible smartphones can automatically switch between Wi-Fi and cellular networks during an active call, depending on signal strength, without disrupting the conversation. This background transition helps maintain call continuity and reliability.
Importantly, VoWiFi does not require users to download any additional apps or create new accounts. Calls continue through the phone’s default dialler, and messages are sent via the standard messaging app, making the experience familiar and easy to use. BSNL has also confirmed that Wi-Fi calls will be charged at the same rates as regular voice calls under existing plans, with no extra fees.
To use VoWiFi, customers need a supported smartphone and must enable Wi-Fi calling in their device’s network or call settings. While most modern devices support the feature, compatibility may vary by model and software version. BSNL advises users facing issues to contact customer support or visit a service centre for assistance.
