Studio9, the production arm of TV9 Network, has marked its entry into the OTT space with Jazz City, a ten-episode Bengali-language series now streaming on Sony LIV. The move signals the company’s expansion from television into long-form scripted content, aligning with the industry’s growing shift towards digital-first storytelling.
Set in 1971 Calcutta during the Bangladesh Liberation War, Jazz City blends history with fiction, following the journey of a jazz club owner who becomes entangled in a complex espionage network. The narrative weaves together intelligence agencies, journalists, and resistance groups, offering a layered portrayal of a politically charged era.
Created and directed by Soumik Sen, the series is produced by Studio9 in collaboration with StudioNext. The cast features Arifin Shuvoo, Shantanu Ghatak, Sauraseni Maitra, and Sayandeep Sengupta, among others, bringing together a mix of regional and cross-border talent.
The series stands out for its detailed period setting, with production design and music reflecting the cultural and political atmosphere of 1970s Calcutta. Shot across multiple locations, the project aims to deliver an immersive storytelling experience rooted in authenticity.
With Jazz City, Studio9 positions itself in the premium OTT content space, building on its recent recognition at the Asian Television Awards. The launch underscores the company’s intent to create culturally grounded yet globally relevant narratives as it scales its presence in the streaming ecosystem.
