Air India CEO Campbell Wilson Steps Down Amid Leadership Transition

Campbell Wilson has resigned from his role as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India, according to reports. His exit comes at a crucial time for the Tata Group-owned airline, which has been undergoing a major transformation since its acquisition from the Government of India in January 2022.

Wilson took charge in July 2022, stepping into the role after Ilker Ayci declined the position earlier that year. During his tenure, he was tasked with leading Air India’s ambitious turnaround strategy, focusing on fleet expansion, service upgrades, and operational restructuring.

While the airline has yet to issue an official statement confirming the development, sources indicate that Wilson had expressed his intent to step down and formally communicated his resignation to the board. Earlier this year, there were also indications that the Tata Group had begun exploring potential successors, even though Wilson’s tenure was originally set to run until 2027.

The leadership vacuum extends beyond Air India. Its low-cost arm, Air India Express, has also been without a head since March 19, following the departure of Managing Director Aloke Singh after completing his five-year term.

Wilson’s tenure had also faced scrutiny, particularly after the tragic crash of a London-bound Air India flight in June last year, which resulted in significant loss of life. As the airline navigates this transition phase, the appointment of new leadership will be critical in sustaining its ongoing transformation and rebuilding trust in the brand.
