Luis von Ahn, CEO of language-learning platform Duolingo, has clarified the company’s position on artificial intelligence (AI), assuring that jobs are not at risk, following internal comments that had raised concerns among staff and contractors.
In a LinkedIn post shared on Thursday, von Ahn addressed the controversy:
“To be clear: I do not see AI as replacing what our employees do (we are in fact continuing to hire at the same speed as before). I see it as a tool to accelerate what we do, at the same or better level of quality.”
Background: Internal Memo Sparks Concern
The clarification comes weeks after an internal memo surfaced, suggesting that Duolingo would:
- “Gradually stop using contractors to do work AI can handle.”
- Only grant teams new headcount “if [they] can automate more of their work.”
The memo sparked anxiety among employees and freelancers, leading to calls for clarity from leadership.
New Approach, Same Mission
While reaffirming Duolingo’s commitment to its mission, von Ahn acknowledged a shift in the company’s operational strategy, particularly in how new features are developed.
“My goal is for Duos to feel empowered and prepared to use this technology. No one is expected to navigate this shift alone,” he wrote.
Supportive Measures Introduced
To ensure a smooth transition into an AI-assisted workflow, Duolingo is introducing:
- AI training workshops
- Internal advisory councils
- Dedicated time for AI experimentation
These initiatives aim to help employees adapt to new tools and workflows, while maintaining the platform’s quality and innovation.
