Flipkart is set to expand beyond quick commerce and enter India’s online food delivery market in the coming weeks, according to reports. The Walmart-owned e-commerce company plans to introduce the service through a phased rollout, initially testing the offering with a limited user base before expanding it nationwide.
Speaking about the launch, Kalyan Krishnamurthy, CEO of Flipkart Group, said the company will adopt the same approach it used for Flipkart Minutes. The food delivery service will first be introduced to gather customer feedback and refine the experience before scaling operations.
The service will be available through both a standalone app and integration within the main Flipkart app, allowing users to order food alongside other purchases.
Flipkart is expected to power its food delivery business through the government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), positioning itself in an increasingly competitive market. The move comes as several players experiment with new business models to attract customers.
Ride-hailing platform Rapido recently launched Ownly, focusing on affordability and zero restaurant commissions, while Swiggy introduced Toing, aimed at value-conscious consumers.
Krishnamurthy said Flipkart’s long-term goal is to build a comprehensive restaurant catalogue, ensuring users have access to a wide range of dining options as the platform expands its food delivery business across the country.
