Flipkart’s New Gatekeeping Test Asks: Are You Really Gen Z?

Flipkart’s New Gatekeeping Test Asks: Are You Really Gen Z?

Flipkart, in partnership with McCann India, has launched ‘Are You Really Gen Z?’, a new campaign for its biggest annual shopping festival, Big Billion Days (BBD). The humour-driven campaign turns access to Flipkart’s latest Gen Z fashion and beauty trends into a culture test, gatekeeping them from anyone trying to cash in on the label without earning it.

The idea is built on a familiar irritation: Gen Z’s discomfort when their own slang, memes, and cultural references get picked up and overused by brands and outsiders. Where marketers have long leaned on words like rizz, cooked, and no cap to appear relatable, this campaign flips the script, turning that fatigue into the core idea itself. The film plays out a series of everyday moments where people and brands force Gen Z slang into places it clearly doesn’t fit, met with visible cringe from the actual Gen Zs watching it unfold.

The film then leads viewers to AreYouReallyGenZ.com, a microsite that reimagines the CAPTCHA format as a test of genuine Gen Z fluency, covering culture, fashion, beauty, and internet behaviour. Only those who clear all three rounds unlock exclusive BBD offers on fashion and beauty.

Speaking on the idea, Gagandeep Bindra and Rahul Arcot, Group Creative Directors at McCann India, said the team wanted to give real Gen Z audiences something exclusively theirs, guarded by Gen Z-inspired CAPTCHAs designed to keep copycats out.

The campaign is live now and will run through the Big Billion Days sale starting October 9, 2026, amplified across Flipkart’s digital and social platforms.
