Hyundai Motor India Names Tarun Garg as MD & CEO, Marking a Leadership First

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has appointed Tarun Garg as its managing director and chief executive officer, effective January 1, 2026. The move is historic, as it marks the first time in Hyundai’s 29-year journey in India that an Indian executive has been elevated to the top leadership role.

With over 32 years of experience in the automotive industry, Garg steps into the role at a pivotal time for Hyundai’s India operations. During his long association with HMIL, he has led several critical functions including sales, service and marketing, before most recently serving as whole-time director and chief operating officer. His deep understanding of the Indian market and internal operations positions him to steer the company through its next phase of growth.

Speaking on his appointment, Garg highlighted the transformation underway in India’s automotive sector, driven by innovation, sustainability and changing consumer expectations. He stated that his focus will be on accelerating Hyundai Motor India’s journey towards sustainable growth, technological leadership and stronger alignment with the ‘Make in India’ initiative, while also strengthening the company’s role as a global export hub.

Under his leadership, HMIL plans to prioritise future-ready mobility solutions, enhanced customer experience and greater localisation. The company has committed an investment of ₹45,000 crore through FY2030 to expand its electric and hybrid vehicle portfolio, deploy connected technologies and scale manufacturing capabilities.

Garg’s tenure has already coincided with major milestones for HMIL, including record sales across three consecutive years, improved profitability and the company’s IPO in 2024. He has also championed initiatives such as ‘Samarth by Hyundai’, focused on accessibility and inclusion.

Prior to Hyundai, Garg held senior leadership roles at Maruti Suzuki India. He is a mechanical engineering graduate from Delhi Technological University and holds an MBA from IIM Lucknow
