Marking one year since its formation, the Indian Influencer Governance Council has launched the Indian Influencer Contract Standard (IICS), the country’s first structured contract framework designed for influencer–brand collaborations. Developed in partnership with legal knowledge partner Trilegal, the initiative aims to bring consistency and clarity to India’s rapidly expanding creator economy.
Influencer marketing has become a key element of modern brand strategy. However, many collaborations still rely on informal agreements or inconsistent contract templates. This often creates confusion around payment terms, intellectual property ownership, content usage rights, revisions, exclusivity clauses, and dispute resolution.
The IICS has been introduced to create a neutral industry baseline that helps streamline these partnerships. The framework outlines essential legal and commercial provisions relevant to influencer marketing while allowing flexibility through a separate Statement of Work that can be customised for specific campaigns.
The contract structure addresses several recurring industry concerns. These include clear guidelines for defining the scope of work and revision processes, ownership and usage rights for content, compliance and disclosure requirements, and detailed payment clauses with timelines and escalation mechanisms. It also discourages artificial methods used to inflate campaign performance and introduces a structured approach to morality and reputational considerations.
To manage conflicts, the framework proposes a dispute resolution process where mediation through an IIGC Task Force acts as the first step before further escalation.
According to Yogesh Singh, structured contracts are essential as influencer marketing transactions grow more complex. Sahil Chopra added that the industry now requires clear standards to support trust and long-term partnerships.
The launch coincides with IIGC completing its first year, during which it introduced governance initiatives including industry standards, certification programmes, and creator ecosystem engagement efforts.
