As India’s digital economy continues to expand, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has launched a large-scale public awareness initiative to combat the growing menace of ‘Digital Arrest’ scams. The campaign aims to educate citizens about this emerging form of cyber fraud – where criminals pose as law enforcement officials to manipulate victims into transferring money or sharing personal information.
With digital payments becoming a part of everyday life across both metros and small towns, NPCI’s latest campaign underscores a vital message: while digital transactions are safe, fast, and convenient, users must stay alert to evolving cyber threats.
What is a ‘Digital Arrest’ scam?
In a typical Digital Arrest fraud, scammers impersonate officers from the police, CBI, or income tax departments. Victims are falsely accused of crimes such as money laundering or tax evasion and pressured through fear tactics – often via intimidating video calls featuring fake uniforms and fabricated “warrants.” In a moment of panic, victims may end up transferring money or revealing sensitive data, leading to severe financial and identity theft risks.
Recognising the red flags
NPCI’s campaign highlights three warning signs every user should watch for:
- Unverified official calls: Be wary of sudden calls claiming to be from government or law enforcement agencies.
- Threats and urgency: Scammers use fear – threats of arrest or fines – to rush victims into action.
- Demands for payment: No legitimate authority will ever ask for money transfers or banking details over the phone or video call.
Staying protected
To safeguard against such scams, NPCI urges citizens to:
- Pause and verify: Contact official helplines before responding.
- Report suspicious calls: Dial the National Cybercrime Helpline (1930) or file a report at https://sancharsaathi.gov.in/sfc/.
- Document evidence: Save screenshots, call logs, and messages to assist authorities.
Through this proactive awareness drive, NPCI reinforces its mission of creating a secure, trusted, and informed digital payments ecosystem – where every citizen can transact with confidence and peace of mind.
