On the occasion of World Oceans Day, Ocean with David Attenborough, a landmark feature-length documentary, will premiere on June 8 at 7 PM on National Geographic. The film will also be available for streaming on Hotstar. This marks the first-ever collaboration between legendary broadcaster Sir David Attenborough and National Geographic.
The documentary presents a compelling look into the current state of the world’s oceans. Attenborough, drawing from decades of experience, explores vibrant marine ecosystems-from kelp forests to coral reefs-while exposing the threats they face, including bottom trawling and harmful fishing practices. The film also showcases how marine environments can recover swiftly when protected and managed properly.
Timed to coincide with the UN Ocean Conference 2025 and the Decade of Ocean Science, the documentary aims to drive global awareness and action. With input from marine scientists like Dr. Enric Sala, founder of National Geographic’s Pristine Seas, the film is a powerful call to restore the oceans before it’s too late.
National Geographic’s Tom McDonald praised Attenborough’s ability to bring urgency and hope through his storytelling. JioStar’s Alok Jain echoed the sentiment, highlighting the film’s relevance for India’s 11,000+ km of coastline and its millions of ocean-dependent livelihoods.
Directed by Toby Nowlan, Keith Scholey, and Colin Butfield, and produced by Silverback Films, Ocean is also set for educational release later this year to schools and public institutions.
As Attenborough says, “If we save the sea, we save our world.”
