OpenAI to Open First India Office in New Delhi by Year-End

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has announced that it will open its first office in India later this year. The new office, set to be located in New Delhi, signals the company’s commitment to expanding its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies.

The company confirmed on August 22 that it has officially registered a legal entity in India and has begun assembling a local team. This team will work in close collaboration with the Indian government, tech industry stakeholders, academic institutions, and the developer community to build a stronger AI ecosystem tailored for India.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, emphasized the strategic importance of the Indian market. “India presents a unique and powerful opportunity for AI. With exceptional tech talent, a vibrant developer base, and proactive government support through initiatives like the IndiaAI Mission, India is poised to be a global leader in AI innovation,” he said.

He added, “Opening an office and establishing a dedicated team on the ground marks the beginning of a long-term partnership. We’re here to build AI for India and with India.”

The announcement was welcomed by the Government of India. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw called it a validation of India’s growing leadership in AI. “OpenAI’s move reflects India’s rising influence in digital innovation. With strong foundations in digital infrastructure and talent, we are ready to lead the next AI revolution,” he stated.

As part of the IndiaAI Mission, the government aims to foster a trusted and inclusive AI ecosystem. Vaishnaw added, “We look forward to working closely with OpenAI to ensure AI reaches and empowers every citizen.”
