Perplexity AI’s Comet Browser Aims to Challenge Chrome’s Dominance

Perplexity AI CEO Aravind Srinivas has boldly signaled his company’s intent to take on Google Chrome with a new “agentic” browser called Comet. In a recent social media post, Srinivas directly addressed the tech giant with a simple message: “See you soon, Google Chrome.”

The challenge comes as Comet undergoes extensive testing, with Srinivas sharing performance comparisons against Chrome. “Pressure testing Comet. 120 tabs open on both Chrome and Comet. Memory usage seems okay!” he reported on X.

While specific features remain under wraps, Srinivas hinted at Comet’s revolutionary potential: “Imagine throwing Deep Research at all of your work and life context that is accessible on the web and asking AI to deeply reason, research, and figure out things for you.”

This AI-centric approach could fundamentally transform how users browse the internet, potentially reshaping SEO and SEM landscapes by changing how people search for and discover content.

The move represents Perplexity’s most direct challenge yet to Google’s market dominance. Previously, the company released a Squid Game-inspired ad featuring Lee Jung-jae that playfully targeted Google’s search monopoly.

Google’s browser supremacy has remained largely unchallenged despite efforts from competitors like Microsoft’s Edge with Bing AI. If Comet gains traction, it could mark the beginning of significant shifts in web interaction patterns and possibly loosen Google’s long-standing grip on the browser market.
