From its very first store in 2012 to celebrating its 500th café today, Starbucks India has woven a remarkable story of growth, connection, and community. The journey began in October 2012, when Tata Starbucks-formed as a 50:50 joint venture between Starbucks Corporation and Tata Consumer Products-opened its inaugural store at the historic Elphinstone Building in Mumbai.
Over more than a decade, the brand has expanded rapidly, bringing over 480 stores to more than 80 cities across India. Despite accelerating its footprint, Starbucks also reported widening losses in FY25, with its 65% increase in net loss underlining the challenges of aggressive expansion.
Reaching the 500-store milestone is more than just a number-it’s a celebration of every partner, customer, and community that has walked through its doors. Each Starbucks café has become a third place for patrons, offering not only expertly crafted coffee but a space to connect, reflect, and belong.
Looking ahead, Starbucks India has set its sights even higher. The company aims to operate 1,000 stores by 2028, backed by a strategy to deepen its presence in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, expand drive-thrus, airports, and even 24-hour locations.
As it raises a toast (or a latte) to this major milestone, Starbucks India sends its heartfelt thanks—for every cup shared, every smile exchanged, and every memory brewed. Here’s to 500 stores, and to countless more moments of belonging. 💚
