Dove has unveiled its latest campaign, #ChangeTheCompliment, calling on parents, educators and society at large to rethink how girls are praised in everyday interactions. The initiative urges a shift away from appearance-focused compliments towards recognising girls for their character, abilities and achievements.

Compliments such as “you’re so pretty” or “you’re beautiful” are often among the most common and frequently repeated phrases directed at young girls. While usually well-meaning, Dove points out that constant emphasis on physical appearance can unintentionally signal that how a girl looks is more important than who she is or what she can accomplish. Through #ChangeTheCompliment, the brand advocates a simple change in language that can play a meaningful role in building confidence and self-belief from an early age.
The campaign is informed by insights from the Dove 2024 State of Beauty Report, which revealed that women in India are among the most willing globally to sacrifice a year of their life to achieve their ideal appearance. This pressure begins early, with 61% of girls saying they feel judged based on how they look, affecting their confidence and participation at school, at home and in social environments.
Dove’s research shows that reducing appearance-related pressure and reinforcing self-worth beyond looks can lead to higher confidence, greater participation and stronger self-belief among girls. The campaign encourages praise that highlights qualities such as kindness, courage, intelligence and resilience.
Commenting on the initiative, Vipul Mathur, executive director, personal care at Hindustan Unilever Limited, said Dove’s research highlights how low self-esteem begins much earlier than often realised. He added that by celebrating girls for their strengths and capabilities rather than appearance alone, society can help them build lasting confidence.
The campaign is brought to life through a digital film that demonstrates how small changes in everyday compliments can transform them into affirmations that empower girls.
