Gemini introduces ‘Personal Intelligence’ for app-based personalisation

Google has announced the rollout of Personal Intelligence for Gemini, a new feature designed to deliver deeper personalisation by allowing users to connect select Google apps to the AI assistant. Unveiled on January 14, 2026, the capability is launching in beta for users in the US.

The new feature enables users to link apps such as Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube and Google Search to Gemini with a single tap. By accessing information already available within a user’s Google ecosystem, Gemini can generate more relevant, context-aware responses tailored to individual needs and preferences.

According to Google, Personal Intelligence strengthens Gemini’s ability to reason across multiple sources and retrieve specific details from emails, photos or search history to address user queries. The system can also combine text, image and video inputs, enabling more personalised outputs for tasks including recommendations, trip planning, reminders and information discovery.

Privacy and user control form a core part of the rollout. App connections are turned off by default, and users have full control over which services they choose to connect. Settings can be changed at any time, and personalisation can be disabled for individual conversations. Gemini will also surface indicators explaining which connected sources were used to generate a response, offering greater transparency.

Google has clarified that personal content from connected apps such as Gmail and Google Photos is not used to directly train its AI models. Model training relies on limited, filtered data such as prompts and responses, with measures in place to remove or anonymise personal information.
