MIB Orders Temporary Halt on News TV TRP Ratings Amid West Asia Conflict

India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has directed the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) to suspend the release of Television Rating Points (TRP) for news channels for a period of four weeks. The directive comes amid concerns over the nature and quality of coverage related to the ongoing Iran–Israel conflict and the broader geopolitical tensions involving the United States and Iran.

According to reports, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting observed that several news broadcasters were airing content marked by unwarranted sensationalism and speculative reporting while covering developments in West Asia. Authorities expressed concern that such coverage could heighten public anxiety, particularly among viewers who may have friends or family in the regions directly affected by the conflict.

The temporary suspension is intended to discourage news channels from chasing higher viewership through dramatic or exaggerated coverage during a sensitive international situation. By pausing the release of TRP data, the ministry aims to reduce the competitive pressure that often drives broadcasters to prioritise attention-grabbing content in order to boost ratings.

TRP ratings released by BARC are a key metric used by broadcasters, advertisers and media planners to measure television viewership and assess advertising performance. The weekly data helps determine audience share across channels and influences advertising investments across the television news ecosystem.

With the four-week pause now in effect, the regular weekly TRP reports for news channels will not be published during this period. The move signals the government’s attempt to promote responsible reporting and reduce sensational coverage while geopolitical tensions in West Asia continue to unfold.
