Demand for induction cooktops has surged across India as households look for alternatives to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) amid fears of supply disruptions linked to escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia. The growing concern over cooking gas availability has triggered a sharp spike in sales of electric cooking appliances on major online and quick-commerce platforms.
E-commerce platforms such as Amazon and Flipkart have reported a significant increase in orders for induction cooktops, while quick-commerce platforms including Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart and Zepto have run out of stock in several cities due to overwhelming demand.
According to reports, sales of induction cooktops on Amazon have increased more than 30 times over the past two days, while related appliances such as rice cookers and electric pressure cookers have seen a fourfold rise in demand. Other electric appliances including air fryers and multi-use kettles are also witnessing a surge in purchases as consumers prepare for possible LPG shortages.
The demand spike is being driven by rising LPG prices and uncertainty around supply chains. As tensions in West Asia affect energy markets, households are increasingly turning to electric cooking solutions as a backup or long-term alternative.
Consumer appliances brand Prestige has also capitalised on the trend with a front-page print advertisement for its Electro Duo induction cooktop. The ad cleverly referenced the LPG shortage with the line, “Some cylindrical problems need a rectangular solution.”
The surge has also triggered demand for induction-compatible cookware, as these appliances require specialised pots and pans, many of which are now running out of stock in high-demand regions.
Meanwhile, the government has invoked the Essential Commodities Act to safeguard LPG supply and stabilise availability as concerns around cooking gas shortages continue to grow.
