adidas launches adaptive running shoe, advancing inclusivity in performance footwear

adidas has introduced the Supernova Rise 3 Adaptive, its first running shoe specifically designed for athletes with disabilities, marking a significant step toward inclusive product innovation in performance footwear.

Fronted by Chris Nikic, the campaign highlights a longstanding gap in the industry-access to well-fitting, high-performance shoes. Nikic, the first person with Down syndrome to complete an Ironman triathlon, played a key role in shaping the product, testing prototypes over several years to address challenges like discomfort, blisters, and poor fit.

Built on adidas’ Supernova platform, the adaptive version introduces thoughtful modifications to improve usability. These include a wider fit, a step-in heel for hands-free entry, a low-pressure lacing system to reduce irritation, and tactile elements for athletes with sensory or visual needs. Functional additions such as heel loops with magnetic toggles further enhance ease of use.

The development process involved collaboration with GAMUT Management and a diverse group of adaptive athletes, including Paralympians, ensuring the shoe was designed for performance without compromising accessibility.

Launched globally on March 21 to coincide with World Down Syndrome Day, the product reflects a broader shift in the sportswear industry toward inclusive design.

While competitors like Nike, PUMA, and Under Armour have explored adaptive features, adidas’ move signals a more focused effort to create purpose-built solutions for athletes of all abilities.
