Dua Lipa files lawsuit against Samsung over alleged unauthorised use of image

Dua Lipa has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics in a California federal court, accusing the company of using her image without authorisation on television packaging.

According to the legal filing, the singer is seeking damages of at least $15 million over alleged violations related to copyright, trademark, and publicity rights. The lawsuit claims Samsung used a copyrighted image titled “Dua Lipa – Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024” on cardboard TV boxes displayed and sold at retail outlets.

The complaint further alleges that the use of the image created a misleading impression that Dua Lipa had endorsed or was officially associated with Samsung’s television products. Her legal team argued that the unauthorised use potentially influenced consumer perception and commercial value linked to her public identity.

Court documents submitted as part of the case reportedly include screenshots of social media reactions and comments from consumers referencing the packaging. One comment cited in the filing allegedly stated that a customer would purchase the television “just because Dua is on it,” which the lawsuit claims demonstrates the commercial impact of the image usage.

According to the filing, Dua Lipa became aware of the alleged infringement in June 2025 and requested Samsung to stop using the image. However, the lawsuit claims the company continued distributing the packaging despite the request.

A spokesperson for Samsung Electronics declined to comment on the matter, citing ongoing litigation. Representatives for Dua Lipa have also not publicly commented further on the case.

The lawsuit additionally argues that the alleged unauthorised usage diluted the singer’s brand identity and commercial goodwill by implying endorsement without consent.
