Ahead of the Malayalam month of Karkitakam, beginning July 17, Mathrubhumi Books has launched a specially curated collection of Ramayana publications, offering readers a diverse selection of devotional, literary, scholarly and children’s editions of the epic.
Known as Ramayana Month in Kerala, Karkitakam is traditionally observed with the reading and recitation of the Adhyathma Ramayanam, a practice that symbolises spiritual reflection and renewal during the monsoon season. The tradition traces its roots to the Malayalam translation by Thunchaththu Ramanujan Ezhuthachan, which has introduced generations of readers to the timeless epic.
The new collection features several editions tailored to different reader preferences. Among its key offerings is the Adhyathma Ramayanam (Malayalam), a widely read devotional text during Karkitakam, along with scholarly interpretations by noted writer Prof. M. K. Sanu.
To make the text more accessible for senior readers, Mathrubhumi Books has also introduced a Large Print Edition of the Adhyathma Ramayanam, featuring enhanced typography while preserving the traditional reading experience.
Another highlight is the 30-Day Guided Ramayana, curated by Ramayana scholar Gopalkrishna Vaidhik, which divides the epic into daily reading sections, enabling readers to complete it over the month-long observance.
For younger audiences, the collection includes titles such as Kuttikalude Ramayanam by Cherkkil Govindan Kutty Nair and Ramayanam Kuttikalkku by Ashitha, introducing children to the epic through simplified storytelling.
Commenting on the initiative, Mayura Shreyams Kumar, Director – Digital Business, Mathrubhumi Group, said the collection aims to preserve Kerala’s literary and spiritual heritage while making the wisdom of the Ramayana accessible across generations. The launch will be supported by a multimedia campaign across the Mathrubhumi Group’s media platforms.
