UMG Adopts 72-Hour Paid-Subscriber Window for New Music Releases in India

Universal Music Group (UMG) will roll out a 72-hour subscriber-first release window for all new music in India, starting end-August 2026. Under the new policy, tracks from UMG’s roster of domestic and international artists will be made available exclusively to paying subscribers on participating global and regional streaming platforms for the first three days after release, before opening up to ad-supported, free-tier listeners.

The label described the move as part of a broader push to build a more sustainable music economy in India, aiming to reinforce the value of paid subscriptions while improving artist compensation. The strategy signals UMG’s intent to nudge India’s largely ad-supported streaming audience toward paid plans – a shift the industry has long sought as it looks to close the revenue gap between subscription and free-tier listening in one of the world’s largest, but still under-monetised, streaming markets.

By tying exclusivity to subscription status rather than platform, UMG is also betting that early access will become a meaningful lever for subscriber acquisition and retention across the streaming services it works with, rather than a one-off promotional gimmick tied to a single app.

The move mirrors strategies already tested in more mature streaming markets globally, where windowing and subscriber-first releases have been used to drive premium conversions. Its success in India, however, will hinge on whether listeners accustomed to free, ad-supported access are willing to pay for early listening – or simply wait out the 72 hours.
