OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Ads in India, bringing sponsored content to one of its largest and fastest-growing markets as the company expands its advertising business.
The rollout will initially cover logged-in adult users on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users will continue to have an ad-free experience. ChatGPT Go is priced at ₹399 per month in India.
Ads will appear separately from ChatGPT’s responses and will be clearly marked as sponsored content. OpenAI has said advertising will not influence the answers generated by ChatGPT, while advertisers will not have access to users’ conversations, memories or personal information.
India is a significant market for the platform, with more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, according to OpenAI. The company is positioning advertising as a way for brands to reach consumers while they are actively researching, comparing products or making decisions.
For the initial Indian rollout, OpenAI is working with WPP and Omnicom, with more than 50 brands expected to launch campaigns this week. The partnerships are non-exclusive, with OpenAI indicating that it plans to work with more agencies.
A self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager is scheduled to become available in India on September 4, allowing businesses to advertise directly, with daily budgets starting at ₹725.
The move marks a significant shift for digital advertising, placing brands inside an AI-led environment where consumers are increasingly turning to technology for discovery, research and decision-making.
