Google Gemini has launched a Diwali campaign urging users to ‘tyohaarmaxx’, and it has chosen a fittingly versatile face for the job: comedian Sunil Grover. The film uses his knack for slipping into multiple characters to show how Gemini can help with festive preparations, from checking aarti timings and setting alarms to picking decorative lights and planning post-Diwali outings. Grover plays a woman decorating her home, her mother, and members of two families coming together, each turning to Gemini for help. The tagline sums it up: “There is a Google Gemini for every Sunil.”
The campaign marks a shift in the faces Google uses to make its AI offering relatable. Earlier, Shah Rukh Khan fronted Gemini as a friendly companion. In August, a campaign featuring him demonstrated the platform’s conversational and multilingual strengths, especially for users in Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets. That work was conceptualised by Prasoon Joshi with McCann India and Nirvana Films.
Google has also taken its AI proposition into television storylines. In September, it partnered with JioStar to weave AI-powered Google Search features into Anupama and Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai. In Anupama, the lead character uses AI Mode to plan the construction of a new house. While the Gemini film relies on comedy, these integrations embed AI in familiar domestic situations.
Grover’s multiple personas are not new to Diwali advertising. In October 2024, Zomato featured him in ads for its large-order fleet, where he transformed into several characters to reflect menu variety. Gemini uses a similar device, but to show how one assistant can serve different needs and personalities.
