In a move that could transform how India’s college students engage with artificial intelligence, Google has announced a landmark initiative-offering its premium AI Pro plan, usually priced at ₹19,500 a year, completely free for eligible students across the country.
The offer includes a 12-month subscription to Google’s most advanced AI tools, headlined by Gemini 2.5 Pro-its cutting-edge generative AI model-and access to video generation, smart research assistants, and a generous 2TB of cloud storage. It’s a rare opportunity for students to explore powerful AI capabilities without cost, as they prepare for a workforce that’s rapidly being reshaped by artificial intelligence.
To be eligible, students must be 18 or older and enrolled in a recognized college or university in India. The sign-up process requires verification through SheerID, a global eligibility platform, and must be completed using a personal Gmail account. Google has clarified that institutional email IDs won’t be accepted.
The AI Pro plan doesn’t just offer raw computing power-it’s designed to function as a creative and research companion. From Gemini Live, which allows real-time voice interactions with the AI, to NotebookLM, which helps students summarize documents and generate citations, the tools are positioned to support everything from everyday productivity to high-level academic work. Veo, Google’s AI video creation tool, also forms part of the bundle, allowing students to turn text prompts into short-form videos-pushing creative possibilities even further.
While a payment method is needed to activate the plan, Google has assured users that no charges will be made without prior notice. Students will receive reminders before the trial ends, giving them the freedom to opt out without any billing surprises.
This initiative follows a Google-Kantar study revealing that 75% of Indians are looking for an AI companion to help them grow, while 95% of students using Gemini say they feel more confident in their daily lives. For many, this could be a stepping stone to mastering the digital skills the future demands.
The offer is valid until September 15, 2025. For India’s student community, it’s more than a free trial-it’s an open door to the AI age.
