HDFC Bank and creative agency Kinnect have reimagined fraud awareness as entertainment with “Vigil Aunty Says – Laziness Saves,” a seven-episode stand-up comedy special now streaming exclusively on JioHotstar.
The campaign builds on Vigil Aunty, HDFC Bank’s long-running fraud-awareness mascot, and flips a familiar truth about scams: fraudsters rely on urgency to push people into hasty mistakes – clicking suspicious links, sharing OTPs, or falling for threats like Digital Arrest scams. The series counters that pressure with an unlikely hero – laziness – encouraging people to pause before reacting to anything that feels too urgent or demanding.
Rather than lean on fear-based warnings or standard banking advisories, the special hands the mic to comedians Aakash Gupta, Gaurav Kapoor, Ramkumar, Harsh Gujral, Sonu Venugopal, Munawar Faruqui, and Kenny Sebastian, each building a set around a different everyday form of laziness that circles back to a simple safety takeaway: a few extra seconds of hesitation can prevent a scam.
The campaign extends offline too, with an outdoor billboard execution designed to look unfinished – as if workers were too lazy to complete it – literalizing the “Laziness Has Spread Everywhere” message in physical space.
HDFC Bank’s Ravi Santhanam noted that fraudsters manipulate people through panic, and the campaign meets audiences in a language they already love – comedy. Kinnect’s Chandni Shah added that the format turns an important public-interest issue into something people actively choose to watch, marking Vigil Aunty’s evolution from short-form messaging into a full entertainment platform.
